Black’s worldbuilding is so complete and so vivid that it’s easy to get lost in the world of the trickster Fae. Their lavish yet corrupt society comes to life immediately and one can feel the peril–and the beauty–of its existence almost as if it were real.
The protagonist, Jude, is a heroine worthy of admiration because even though she gets lost in the world of Fae and stoops to committing terrible deeds, one can understand her motivations and even question whether one wouldn’t act the same way, or do the same things she does, were one in her place.
The allure of the Fae is that they are so magical and beautiful but can also prove so poisonous and deadly to the touch. And yet here is Jude who, as a mortal, is carving out a place for her within this dangerous society. (
